+

Where are you located?

+

We were founded in the heart of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, and it will always be our original home and core inspiration.

We've since relocated our base camp to the beautiful lakefront of Milwaukee. However, we have roots all over the Upper Peninsula, Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario, Wisconsin, and the rest of the Great Lakes region. Our goods are hand-made in Michigan.

What makes Great Lakes Coastal different from other Great Lakes lifestyle brands?

+

We're just built differently.

We make all our goods in Michigan, and that's a claim we're proud to say sets us apart. The Great Lakes area and the people who choose to live here are in our DNA, and the reason for our existence. As a local or a visitor, we distinctly designed each shirt with you in mind, and to as great a degree as possible, work with a supply chain and artists centered around this area.

Above all else, our shirts are unique, original, and hand made locally by people who care.

What fabrics and materials are used in production?

+

All materials are listed on each product's page. Our Beach Shirts are constructed from the highest quality 100% hemp linen, for maximum comfort and wearability whether you're in the sun or snow. Hemp is among the most sustainable fabrics, even compared to cotton and flax linen, offers an SPF of 15, and natural antimicrobial properties. Our shirts get softer with use and wear in, not out.

Our Bootjack Sling Packs are made from recycled ECOPAK textile, which is extremely sustainable and recycles approximately 5 plastic bottles per bag and reduces carbon emissions by 0.25 lb.

Read our Sustainability / Ethics page for more details.

What steps have you taken to minimize environmental impact?

+

This is one of our core values. We're extremely proud to be the most sustainable Great Lakes beachwear brand, and on par with other global leaders. Having a localized supply chain is an enormous factor in reducing our footprint, and building all our goods with hemp and ECOPAK fabrics sets us apart dramatically.

Check out Sustainability / Ethics for more info on this.

Are you involved with any community non-profits?

+

You bet. Through our 1% for the Great Lakes program, we contribute 1% of profits to a different non-profit each month. These organizations are focused on protecting Great Lakes wilderness areas, improving water quality, and expanding access to natural areas.

What's the best song about the Great Lakes?

+

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot is only rivaled by Stan Rogers' White Squall.

Do you offer women's clothing? What plans do you have for gear beyond shirts?

+

We have a few women's items (clothing and gear) in our pipeline that are probably 1+ years out. In addition, we have some simple additions to our line coming soon, including hats, tees, and stickers.

Do your Beach Shirts fit women?

+

It really depends on the person, but as a rule, they don't fit women especially well, due to the more tailored cut compared to traditional Hawaiian shirts. That's why we're developing women's-specific beachwear!
